Overview
Applications are open for admission to Princeton University Graduate School for programmes beginning in Fall 2027.
Princeton offers full-time graduate programmes across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering. Applicants must select one degree programme and follow that programme’s individual academic, testing and document requirements.
Deadlines vary by programme:
All applications and supporting materials must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the applicable programme deadline.
Who can apply
Applications may be submitted by domestic and international candidates.
Applicants normally need a bachelor’s degree or an accepted international equivalent before enrolling. Princeton states that a foreign degree with a standard programme length shorter than three years will not be treated as equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
Academic preparation, prerequisite subjects, professional experience, GRE requirements and writing-sample requirements vary by department. Applicants must review the requirements for their selected field before applying.
Applicants whose primary language is not English may need to submit valid TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test results. Exemptions apply in certain cases, including qualifying applicants whose undergraduate instruction was entirely in English and certified by their institution.
What the opportunity provides
Pay the non-refundable US$90 fee through the portal. Eligible applicants requesting a waiver must submit the request at least two business days before their programme deadline and wait for the decision before paying.
Submit the completed application before the programme-specific deadline, then monitor the portal for recommendations, scores and other required materials.
Open step linkPrinceton guarantees full funding to degree-seeking PhD students throughout their regular programme-enrolment period. The support package includes:
Funding may be delivered through university fellowships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships or external fellowships.
Funding for master’s students varies significantly. Princeton does not provide universal central funding for every master’s candidate. Some programmes offer full or partial support, while others are generally self-funded.
Required documents
General application materials include:
Current students are encouraged to upload a transcript showing their fall-semester grades when those grades become available. Applicants who are not currently studying, or whose institution does not issue fall grades, do not need to provide them.
Applicants must check their selected programme because departmental requirements differ.
Selection process and timeline
Applications are reviewed by the relevant academic department or programme.
Admission decisions are normally released from late January through 15 March. Waitlisted applicants may receive a final decision closer to 15 April.
Applicants receiving an offer must normally accept it by 15 April at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, or the offer may be rescinded.
Important conditions
Visa and immigration information
International candidates may apply through the same graduate application system.
Admission does not guarantee approval of a United States student visa. Successful international applicants must follow Princeton’s international-student onboarding instructions and the requirements of the relevant United States authorities.
TripDoc cannot confirm visa approval, interview availability or entry into the United States.
TripDoc verification notes
TripDoc confirmed on 16 September 2026 that the official Fall 2027 application portal is open.
Deadlines and additional requirements vary by programme. Applicants should use Princeton’s Fields of Study pages to verify their exact deadline, degree availability, testing requirements and additional documents.
The funding classification is Varies because Princeton guarantees full funding for regularly enrolled PhD students, while master’s funding differs by programme.
