The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Scholarship for Foreign Students supports non-Japanese students who are studying or planning to study for a master’s or doctoral degree at a Japanese graduate school.
Candidates from all nationalities and academic disciplines may apply. Applications are submitted directly to the Foundation, meaning university nomination or internal university pre-selection is not required.
Only approximately ten recipients are expected to be selected.

The programme is intended for:
• Non-Japanese citizens
• International students enrolled in a Japanese graduate school
• Applicants planning to enrol in a Japanese graduate school

• ¥230,000 monthly for a one- or two-year funding period
• ¥210,000 monthly for a three-year funding period
• ¥180,000 monthly for a funding period longer than three years
• Funding throughout the minimum period required to complete the degree
• Possible financial support for attending an international conference, subject to Foundation rules
• No repayment obligation under normal scholarship conditions
What the scholarship does not explicitly cover
The Foundation states that the programme does not separately cover: Applicants should therefore verify university tuition obligations and prepare a separate financial plan.
The final 2027 conditions will be released in August 2026.
Based on the previous official guidelines, applicants should expect requirements including:
• Enrolment or planned enrolment in a Japanese graduate school
• More than 12 months remaining until graduation
• Starting a master’s programme by age 30
• Starting a PhD programme by age 35
• Commitment to contributing to the applicant’s home country

Ability to communicate in basic Japanese
• Ability to attend an interview conducted in Japanese
Applicants to professional graduate schools may face additional restrictions unless they can submit an acceptable research plan.

The recommendation letter should contain a signature or official seal. Under previous rules, unsigned recommendations were not accepted.
Research proposal warning
Previous guidelines required the research proposal to be written in Japanese.

• How the research would contribute to their home country
• Previous academic, research and social achievements
An additional English version could be provided, but it did not replace the mandatory Japanese version.
