Who can apply / eligibility
Eligible ADB-country nationals with a strong bachelor's record, two years of full-time post-degree experience, English proficiency and good health. Applicants must be 35 or younger, live/work in their home country, not already study for a graduate degree, and commit to two years' work at home after graduation. Developed-country dual citizenship and specified ADB/institution employment or family connections disqualify applicants. Read the complete exclusions. [1]
GSFS excludes second-master's applicants; experience must relate to the bachelor's field. [3]
Benefits
Tuition, monthly living/housing support, books, insurance and travel; possible thesis grant. Maximum two years; second-year renewal depends on satisfactory performance. Family costs, computers and various extra study/travel expenses are excluded. I cannot confirm the 2027 monthly stipend amount.
Eligible fields
Materials Science; Advanced Energy; Integrated Biosciences; Natural Environmental Studies; Ocean Technology, Policy, and Environment; Environment Systems; Human and Engineered Environmental Studies; Socio-Cultural Environmental Studies; International Studies; Sustainability Science. [2]
Required documents — main special-admission route
GSFS application form; designated research plan; bachelor's transcript and graduation certificate; two confidential references. TOEFL iBT/IELTS is mandatory for Advanced Materials Science, preferred otherwise within this route. Referees email letters directly. [3]
For subsequent ADB assessment, prepare applicant income/salary and parental income evidence; follow the university's stage-specific request. Previous overseas study is also a selection concern under ADB's policy.
Application steps
University screening precedes ADB selection; results are expected around May. Successful scholars start in October.
Integrated Biosciences exception
Apply for Schedule B in November, contact a supervisor beforehand, supply TOEFL iBT/IELTS, and travel to Japan for January interview. Successful applicants seeking nomination must contact the liaison office by 19 February 2027.
The department's retrieved guide still foregrounds Schedule A and says Schedule B details will follow. I cannot confirm exact November dates. Its overseas-education route requires an information sheet and certificate of contact. IELTS must be Academic; General and One Skill Retake are not accepted.
Fees and visa
Integrated Biosciences applicants pay the examination fee upfront. Scholars may seek reimbursement after enrollment; other examination-related expenses are not reimbursed under this provision. Admission can proceed without the scholarship, creating a self-funding risk. Applicants must obtain a visa; scholarship selection is not visa approval.
I cannot confirm a universal application-fee waiver, exact exam-fee amount, visa-fee coverage or guaranteed visa assistance from the reviewed scholarship documents.
Important date warning
The 2027 PDF gives a later original-document deadline of March 20, 2026, inconsistent with its timeline. I cannot confirm the corrected date; ask the liaison office. Do not silently change it to 2027.
