United Nations University Junior Fellows Internship Fall 2026
If you have been looking for a strong international internship linked to the United Nations system, this one is worth serious attention.
The United Nations University (UNU) is recruiting for its Junior Fellows Internship Programme in Tokyo, Japan under the Office of the Rector. The internship is designed for graduate students and young professionals who want hands-on experience in a UN-related institution, especially in research, administration, planning, communications, and event coordination.
This opportunity is for the Fall 2026 term and is expected to run for about 6 months, from 1 September 2026 to 26 February 2027. The work is primarily on-site in Tokyo, although UNU says there is some flexibility for remote work. Importantly, for this Fall 2026 intake, applicants both in Japan and overseas will be considered regardless of current location.
What the internship offers
Selected Junior Fellows work full time during UNUβs regular working hours, which are 9:30 to 17:30, Monday to Friday. Interns also receive 1.5 days of leave per month.
UNU states that Junior Fellows receive a monthly stipend to help cover part of their living costs, including transport to and from the headquarters in Shibuya, Tokyo. The exact stipend amount is determined based on the duty station. However, UNU also explains that the stipend is intended mainly for applicants who are not receiving financial support from other sources, except that scholarships for academic studies are not counted as disqualifying support for this purpose.
Main responsibilities
According to the official posting, Junior Fellows may support the Office of the Rector in areas such as:
This means the role is especially attractive for applicants with strengths in writing, research, communication, organisation, and analysis.
Who can apply?
Required application documents
UNU asks applicants to submit several items as part of the application. These include:
an application through the official apply link
A very important detail is that the recommendation letters must be sent directly by the referees to ro_internship@unu.edu
using their official institutional, academic, or corporate email addresses. Recommendation letters submitted by the applicant will not be accepted. UNU also expects that at least one referee should be a professor familiar with your academic ability, where possible.
For applicants who need proof of English, UNU accepts TOEFL, IELTS, or TOEIC unless they meet the exemption criteria listed in the vacancy.
Selection process
Stage 1: document review and possible competency-based assessment
Stage 2: a telephone or Zoom interview for shortlisted candidates
Stage 3: a short time-restricted assignment, done on the same day as the interview, with up to 2 hours allowed
This is a strong sign that applicants should prepare beyond just submitting documents. A polished application, clear motivation, and practical writing/analysis ability will matter.
Important note for applicants
UNU clearly states that this internship is not meant to lead directly to employment with the organisation. It is designed to complement an internβs studies, so applicants should not expect automatic employment after the internship. UNU also states that it does not charge any application, processing, training, interviewing, or testing fee.
That fee warning is especially important. Any request for payment connected to this application should be treated as suspicious.
